I wish that every job could be as expansive as Independence Hall, or Amtrak 30^th St. Station or Citizens Bank Park / Philly Stadium but the reality is that a lot of the work we get is trying to come up with scaffolding solutions in very tight spaces. Our guys are some of the best at designing scaffold that will get crews access to just about any working space.

The mechanical room at the Bryn Mawr hospital is a perfect example. There was virtually no room in there to get the scaffolding in – let alone set it up.  Crews needed to get on top of this maze of equipment to install pipe for new HVAC and to run two new electrical lines above that massive green tank.  But how could they get “up air” safely to do it?

Superior scaffold devised a plan to navigate the spider web of equipment and get crews above it all where they could work safely and comfortably (check out the photos).

Superior used a combination of system scaffold, diagonals, decking, handrail and various other gear to create a safe working platform. In one picture you can even see that we had to cantilever one leg around the green monster to carry the decking above, very innovative solution in a tight space.

The job was a smashing success.  Crews got their work done safely and efficiently and the hospital was thrilled.

In simple terms, shoring is the act of propping up with shores.  Shoring is a general term used in construction to describe the process of supporting a structure in order to prevent collapse so that construction can proceed.

Now, a little more clarificaton – from the SSFI (Scaffolding, Shoring, Forming Institute) Shoring is not scaffolding and scaffolding is not shoring.  The difference is in the use.

The American National Standards Institute describes scaffolding as “a temporary elevated or suspended work unit and its supporting structure used for supporting worker(s) or materials, or both,” while the same agency describes shoring as “ The vertical supporting members in a formwork system.”

Shoring up Norristown, PA parking garage – concrete repair

Check out this cool shoring job at the Norristown, PA Main street parking garage in Montgomery County.

The concrete beams were deteriorating and needed repair.  Superior Scaffold was called in to shore up 5 floors of the garage so crews could remove and replace the bad sections of concrete.  We shored up the supporting joists with our 2′ X 5′ Hi Load shoring frames so crews could work on the main cement beams.

 

The challenge here was that the parking garage only had a clearance of 6 feet so our normal deliver trucks wouldn’t fit.

 

Crews had to unload the Hi-load shoring frames, jacks, and heads onto pickup trucks and deliver the equipment to each respective floor so they could then be put into place.

Mast Climber Rental Division – Superior Scaffold, Philadelphia, PA

In the previous post we talked about our Suspended Scaffold Rental Division – and today we are going to look at our Mast Climber Rental Division – which is also a part of our Powered Access Division (along with Suspended Scaffolds).

Mast climbing work platforms (MCWP) or Mast Climbers are particularly useful when access to a long span is needed so workers can quickly and easily move across the entire width of the wall or surface, at varying heights.

In the last post we talked about our Scaffold Rental Division – but today we are going to look at our Suspended Scaffold or swing department – which is a part of our Powered Access Division.

Suspended scaffolds or swing stages are often used to provide access and working platforms in the construction, alteration, inspection, repair, refurbishment and maintenance of high-rise buildings, industrial plants, bridges and other large structures.

Suspended scaffold is ideal for projects where traditional scaffolding is not practical or cost effective.  We carry the Altrex Modular Suspended Platform System that is super flexible and allows for access to the building at many locations simultaneously, allowing work to be done faster and more efficiently.

Suspended scaffolds  (swing staging, suspended platforms) are great for working safely at heights.
